Recipe Management and Bill of Materials

Recipe Management

  • Purpose: Manages the instructions for producing a product, similar to a cooking recipe.

  • Contents:

    • Ingredients/Materials (raw materials, components, or semi-finished goods)

    • Quantities for each ingredient

    • Processing steps (sequence of operations, environmental conditions, equipment to use)

    • Quality control parameters (temperature ranges, curing times, testing checkpoints)

    • Yield expectations (expected output vs. input quantity)

  • Focus: How the product is made and what proportions to use for consistent quality.

Example (THC Infused Edibles):

  • 1,000g decarboxylated cannabis flower

  • 15 liters coconut oil

  • Heat extraction at 180°F for 3 hours

  • Filter, mix with sugar & gelatin, pour into molds

2. Bill of Materials (BOM)

  • Purpose: A structured list of all materials and components required to make a product, including raw materials, sub-assemblies, and packaging.

  • Contents:

    • Item codes / SKUs

    • Descriptions

    • Unit of measure

    • Required quantity per unit of finished product

    • Optional: cost, supplier, inventory location

  • Focus: What is needed — a procurement and inventory perspective.

Example (Same Cannabis Edibles Product):

Item Code Description Qty per Batch Unit
RM-101 Decarboxylated Cannabis Flower 1,000 g
RM-202 Coconut Oil 15 L
PK-001 50-Count Edible Packaging Pouches 20 units
PK-002 Retail Labels 20 units

How They’re Connected

  • The recipe defines the process: “What to add, in what order, under what conditions.”

  • The BOM defines the materials list: “What items must be available and in what quantity before you start.”

  • In most manufacturing systems (like Figgro ERP):

    1. Recipe drives production instructions for operators.

    2. BOM ensures inventory availability and costing before the job starts.

    3. Integration: Each recipe is linked to a BOM so that when you create a production order, the ERP:

      • Reserves inventory from the BOM list.

      • Guides the production process per the recipe steps.

      • Tracks yield and variance (actual vs. planned usage).

In short

  • Recipe Management = The method and proportions for making a product.

  • BOM = The shopping list of materials required to make it.

  • Together, they ensure manufacturing is consistent, cost-controlled, and compliant with regulatory standards like GMP or HACCP.
